It engages the child into the world beyond and into science. This investigative tool in astronomy is an asset for Air Force School Sulur. Children as a part of experiential learning collect and analyse radiation from celestial objects, even those in the far reaches of the universe.

MIYAWAKI

“MIYAWAKI” forestation method is a unique way to create an urban forest which can be grown in a short span of 2Yrs. This method was pioneered by Japanese Botanist “Akira Miyawaki”. This method of plantation ensures growth of forest within a short span of 20-30Yrs while a conventional forest takes 200Yrs. In this method, native species of plants are planted close to each other as you can see, leading to plants receiving sunlight only from the top and thereby, ensuring growth upward than sideways resulting in a 30 times denser plantation naturally. This concept is popular in highly populated areas with extreme shortage of land as it aids the environment in pollution control, enhancing quality of air and helps maintain the water table. It gives layered and more variegated habitats that are dependent on local flora and fauna. As a drive to enhance the green cover in the Station, the project has been conceived and initiated in the Air Force School, 5 BRD in approx 500 Sq ft area. It is fully developed and maintained by the school students of VII Std. Airforce school 5 BRD Sulur is amongst the first school to introduce the forestation method. MIYAWAKI method is a global practice of forestation. It places emphasis on the value and contribution of native species to the environment. It enables the micro, mini and mega forests. It gives layered and more variegated habitats that are dependent on local flora and fauna. Airforce school 5 BRD Sulur is amongst the first school to introduce the forestation method. In school, for growing the forests, the soil was prepared by adding a combination of materials that allowed perforation and water retention. Naturally available resources such as rice husk, peanut shells and corn cobs were added to perforate the soil and to make room for the plant roots to grow quickly. Water retainers like coco peat and sugarcane stalk were added to increase the soil’s water retention capacity. To complete the preparation, nourishing mixtures like manure and vermicompost were added to the composition to create a nutrient-rich environment. It was ensured that native species were identified which were best suited for plantation. The local plant species were categorized into 4 layers

  1. Canopy layer
  2. Tree layer
  3. Sub-tree layer
  4. Shrub layer

Staggering of the saplings was done and were planted close to each other with an average of 3-5 saplings being accommodated in every square meter. Contrary to popular myth, the saplings will not fight for nutrition but learn to survive in a codependent manner. The plants work in harmony to create strong root networks underground that allow them to interact with each other and share nutrition between species.

We had initially planted trees namely, kadam, wild guava, rain tree, bitter wood, Malabar kino, white teak, etc. In the extended Miyawaki forest we have planted Bahera, bamboo, Indian tulip tree, pride of India, and others. Now the school has planned an extension to the existing Miyawaki Garden by approx. 520 sq ft by planting an additional 40 plants.
